Anzac Day 25.4.24

It was brought to the attention of the Eastbourne Royal British Legion Branch that the memorial to the Anzacs in Ocklynge Cemetery, in Old Town, had been lacking in memorial services over the past few years. We were asked if we could help to arrange a service of remembrance for Anzac Day and we were glad to help.

A short but moving service was organised and a Māori hymn was sung with both the Australian and New Zealand National Anthems. The service was attended by the Mayor, Candy Vaughan, esteemed Veterans, Standards and guests.

The presence of these dignitaries and war heroes added a profound sense of significance to the event, underscoring the importance of remembering the sacrifices made by the Anzacs. As wreaths were reverently laid, at the foot of the soaring Cross of Sacrifice, which indicates a cemetery of more than 40 war graves, of which Ocklynge cemetery has over 100, a sense of solemnity and gratitude permeated the atmosphere.

During the service, speeches were delivered by the mayor and veterans, reflecting on the valor and selflessness of the Anzacs. The camaraderie and unity among attendees, as they stood in solidarity to honour the fallen soldiers, created a poignant and powerful scene. As the last notes of the bugle faded into the distance, a sense of reverence lingered in the air. The service honoured the memory of the Anzacs but also emphasized the importance of never forgetting their bravery and sacrifice.

It served as a  reminder of the debt of gratitude we owe to those who gave their all in service of their countries, ensuring that their legacy continues to be celebrated in remembrance for generations to come.

It is our intention to make this service part of our annual events calendar.
