On a bright and spirited afternoon in Eastbourne, The Garden Bar hosted a memorable celebration marking the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day – a moment in history that signalled the end of World War II in Europe and the beginning of peace after years of global conflict.
The event was a beautiful blend of remembrance, celebration, and community spirit. Guests were treated to an outstanding performance by Jennie Castle, who took the audience on a nostalgic musical journey. Beginning with a heartfelt tribute to the wartime era, she brought the spirit of the 1940s to life before moving seamlessly through the beloved hits of the 1950s and 60s. It was a truly fitting soundtrack for a day of reflection and joy.
The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, filled with laughter, dancing, and shared stories. Among the honoured guests was a Royal Marine veteran aged 101, whose presence brought real meaning to the occasion. Meeting him was a true privilege for everyone in attendance, and a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by his generation.
The celebration wasn’t just about music and memories – it was also about giving back. In a touching gesture of support, Ali, the manager of The Garden Bar, presented Chairman Allan Leith of the Eastbourne and District Veterans CIC with a cheque for £1,740 – an incredible amount raised during the day’s festivities. These funds will go directly toward supporting local veterans and the important work of the CIC.
“A huge thank you to everyone who joined us,” said Allan Leith. “It was a fantastic day – filled with community spirit, respect for our veterans, and an incredible show of generosity. We’re truly grateful.”
As we mark 80 years since VE Day, we remember not only the historic moment of peace, but also the enduring legacy of those who served. Events like this ensure their stories are not forgotten.
