It is with a heavy heart that we share the sad news of the passing of Petty Officer Eric Deach, a cherished friend, dedicated veteran, and true gentleman. Eric passed away peacefully in the early hours of 26th May 2025, just 12 days short of his 100th birthday – an incredible milestone he had hoped to reach.
Eric was not alone in his final hours. He was visited by several friends throughout the day, each offering comfort and companionship. In a truly touching act of friendship and loyalty, Dave Whatley remained by Eric’s side through the night so that he would not be alone on his final journey.
Eric’s passing has left a significant void in our community. He was a man of great character, rich in stories, wit, and kindness – a presence that lit up every room and touched many hearts. We are grateful for the time we shared with him and honoured to have had him as part of our lives.
A Fitting Farewell
To everyone who attended Eric’s funeral on 1st July, I extend my heartfelt thanks. The ceremony was a profoundly moving tribute to a remarkable man.
We were humbled and proud to see such a strong turnout:
50 veterans on parade
8 standard bearers
5 veterans serving as pallbearers
And in attendance, our local MP, Josh Babarinde
It was an honour for all of us to accompany Eric on his final journey. You carried out this solemn duty with professionalism, pride, and care – values we, as former members of the Armed Forces, continue to uphold. Your presence spoke volumes about the respect and love we all held for Eric, and it gave him the send-off he truly deserved.
This was the largest turnout we have witnessed for one of our own, and it was a powerful reminder of the strength and unity of our veteran community. I am incredibly proud of each and every one of you.
Eric’s legacy will live on in our memories – in his stories, his humour, and the example he set for us all. He was not just a WWII veteran, but a dear friend and a shining example of honour and resilience.
Rest in peace, Petty Officer Eric Deach. You will not be forgotten.
With sincere thanks,
Allan Leith
