D-Day 80
This year we commemorate the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings on 6 June 1944 which changed the course of World War 2 and the beginning of the liberation of Europe.
By the end of the day over 9,000 Allied soldiers were killed or wounded and a foot hold in Continental Europe had been established. Their sacrifice allowed over 100,000 soldiers to continue across Europe and defeat Hitler’s troops.
The day’s events, organised by Eastbourne Royal British Legion and assisted by Eastbourne and District Veterans CIC, commenced at Eastbourne Town Hall where a small group of Veterans gathered alongside the Mayor and other guests for a short service of remembrance. This was followed by the main service at the Eastbourne Memorial Houses where over 70 veterans and guests gathered to honour the bravery and sacrifice of those who served in Operation Overlord. A Spitfire fly over added that special moment to the day. Following the service attendee’s enjoyed tea and coffee and a finger buffet with some guests joining our Navy Veterans for a toast and a small rum.
The day’s celebrations were brought to a close with a BBQ and a few beers at the Oval Football Club where we all had time to reflect on the day in a nice relaxed atmosphere.
A special thanks to all who took time to plan and support this mile stone in our history and for making this day memorable for us all.
Lest We Forget
